Description

Abbott. Costello. Laughton. Three stars boasting one Oscar(r) between them deliver the yo-ho-ho-ho-ing of this merry musical-comedy tale of pirates and buried treasure. Casting an acclaimed actor renowned for gravitas in a knockabout romp may seem unusual. Yet Academy Award(r) winner* Charles Laughton, who portrayed menacing Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty and the title role in the swashbuckling adventure Captain Kidd, sails into this sea of silliness with great glee. Instigators of most of that silliness are, of course, the legendary Bud and Lou, turning the voyage under the Jolly Roger into a jollier one with their comic timing, verbal jousts and madcap mayhem. Arrrrrr you ready?

In 1951 Abbott & Costello signed a deal to produce two features and release them thru Warner Brothers. Those films being Jack and the Beanstalk and A & C Meet Captain Kidd. The films were released through Warners but the copyrights were owned by companies formed by A & C. When Kidd was re-released through RKO in 1960 the copyright was sold. It eventualy lapsed into PD and flooded the Home Movie market in the late 1970's on both Super 8 and 16mm. In 1980 a faded but complete 35mm Super Cine Color print was found and released on Super 8 by Ivy Films. That faded 35mm positive print is all we had until Warner Brothers located their 35mm print. That's the version we now have on DVD. It is much better than previous versions that have been released. The print is clean without the pre print splices that all other versions have, and the color is much improved. This is probably the best print we will ever have on this Abbott and Costello film -- ever.
